“The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.”

This is God introducing Himself, in His own words, right after Israel's worst failure. Not a list of rules — a list of who He is. Goodness isn't something He does occasionally; it's the name He gives Himself.

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want... Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.”

The most quoted psalm in Scripture, and it earns it. It doesn't promise an easy road, it promises a Shepherd who walks the hard one with you and never leaves the valley before you're through it.

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Written in the middle of a psalm about nations shaking and mountains falling into the sea. The command to be still isn't for a quiet moment — it's for the middle of the storm, because He is still in control of it.

“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy... Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.”

He does not deal with us according to our sins, this passage says outright. Mercy here isn't God lowering the bar — it's a Father who already knows exactly what we are and loves us anyway.

“The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary... they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength.”

He doesn't run out. Not of power, not of patience, not of attention on you specifically. And the strength He offers isn't a one-time transfer — it's renewed every time you actually wait on Him.

“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

This is written in the middle of a book that is, literally, a lament — the aftermath of Jerusalem's destruction. And it's exactly there that the writer lands on the one thing that hasn't changed: God's faithfulness, fresh again this morning.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”

John doesn't start with a manger, he starts before time existed. The God who spoke the universe into being is the same one who put on a body and moved into the neighborhood. Beautiful name, beautiful claim.

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

Not "without me, less" — without me, nothing. A branch doesn't try harder to make fruit; it just stays connected and the fruit is the natural result. Same principle, applied to a life.

“Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers... shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Paul builds this list to be exhaustive on purpose: everything you could name, everything you're afraid of, it's all covered. There is no category of thing, seen or unseen, that outranks this.

“Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.”

The one thing said three times in a row in Scripture. Not powerful, powerful, powerful — holy, holy, holy. Everything else about His character sits on top of this one: He is entirely set apart, and He always will be.

“The true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Jesus says the Father isn't after a location or a performance, He's after this: worship that's actually real, not just going through the motions. Which is the whole point of the song below — strip it back down to just Him.
